General Information:
Book Type(s):    true story, biography and autobiography

HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies

Summary:
A custodian at a Maryland school tells his own story of growing up poor in North Carolina, of racism, of hatred, of resilience, of Martin Luther King, and of the things that matter in life.

Teaching Ideas:
The book lends itself to a study of oral history (with, for example, Thomas' Come Go With Me) or with 20th century African American history (with the Delany sisters or Hamilton's Bells of Christmas or Her Stories). Students might audiotape a family member who has an interesting biographical story to tell and then create a written version of that account. In this way, audience, point of view, and grammar could all be considered and might have greater relevance than just a class exercise. Civil Rights: www.dept.usm.edu/~www-dept.usm.edu/~mcrohb/
