General Information:
Book Type(s):    historical fiction, nonfiction, reference, mystery

HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies| science

Summary:
The authors explore the mysterious fate of Sir John Franklin's failed expedition to find the Northwest Passage in 1845. Sections of fictionalized history alternate with present-day, first-person narrative of the scientific search for answers. A glossary, timeline, further reading list, and the many archival documents, photographs, maps, and paintings extend the use of the book.

Teaching Ideas:
Because the story is presented as a mystery to be solved by modern science, prediction strategies such as DR-TA would be useful. Students could also compare the styles of historical fiction with first-person scientific description. The book could be used in a text set of true adventures, i.e., The Bone Detectives or explorers, i.e., The Amazing Potato. The topic of lead poisoning lends itself to further inquiry using materials from the health department or clinics. checc.sph.unc.edu/rooms/library/lead www.parentsplace.com/health/etyrecalls/gen/0,3375,10087,00.html
