Summary:
A young Navajo boy, who must leave his Southwest home, draws courage from his grandfather's story about being a "Code Talker" during WWII.

Teaching Ideas:
The soft colors of the illustrations and the quiet heroism of the story make this book a welcome addition to a text set on WWII or Native Americans. The topics of the role of grandparents and the effects of relocation exemplified by the main characters in the story provide discussion and writing prompts. The introductory author's note contributes the historical, cultural context for the story which encourages further inquiry into the history--or lack of it--and the oppression of Native Americans who were forbidden to use their languages for too long. Tables of Navajo-English code allow students to play with the code and translate the word on the book cover. www.lapahie.com/Navajocodetalker/html www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq61-4.htm
