Summary:
An easy narrative about travel in this country by car for African Americans in the 50s and 60s. Ruth's story is fiction, but the "The Negro Motorist Green Book" and its role in helping a generation of African American travelers avoid some of the indignities of Jim Crow are historical fact.

Teaching Ideas:
A fine addition to any unit on Civil Rights. It would be a good focal choice for a unit of study. Create a time line of Jim Crow. Find a copy of the Green Book online and find hotels and restaurants that would have been open to African Americans in your state. Use The Watsons Go to Birmingham to see how another familiy faced the hardships of travel during this time. Esso has been reviled as a monopoly, but this book gives a different view of the oil company. Students could do research on modern corporations to see which ones are doing good.
