Summary:
Set in the Indiana Territory, this story of two friends - Anikwa, a Miami Indian and James, the son of a white trader become friends despite the conflict of their heritage. This book is uniquely crafted in two style of poetic verse. Salt plays a symbolic yet literal role in the story and the writing. Anikwa's poems are shaped like patterns of Miami ribbon work while James' poems began as an image of the stripes on the American flag. As the book progresses, the author weaves the poems together in a single shape.

Teaching Ideas:
Make a time line of the War of 1812. Because of the two voices in poetry here, readers theater is a good choice.
