All of these eight short stories are appropriate for ABE or ESL classes, and some will work well in Family Literacy settings as well. The focus of the stories is on the small details of being in love, of the wonder and delight that love can bring. Some students may be bothered by the small print.
Teaching Ideas:
The entire collection of stories will appeal to some readers, but teachers may choose one or two stories to present in class. "Clematis" may be especially popular with older students; teachers may want to encourage students to draw a sketch of Ruth or to write a list of telling details about her personality and character. Students may want to write one of the stories from a different person's point of view, find photographs that would fit various stories, or find the David Bowie music that begins the title story.
