Summary: |
Alex, fifteen, was left alone in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the weekend while his father, mother and sister, traveled to Illinois to visit an uncle. Then the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, plunging his hometown into a nightmare of darkness, ash and violence. Alex journeys, by foot and skis to find his family trying to survive a transformed landscape and a new society in which all the old rules of living have vanished. |
Teaching Ideas: |
If suddenly, our world changed and we were left alone, what are some things we'd need to do to survive? "What if" scenarios of what is real and what could happen. What is necessary for a person--sense of purpose, love of self and others, a moral code, etc.
Students could map Alex's journey and/or conduct research about supervolcanoes, especially the one in Yellowstone. |
