Summary:
Cuba has fought three wars for independence and still is not free. Acclaimed poet, Margarita Engle has created a lyrical, powerful portrait of Cuba. The main character is a healer who treats anyone in need. Initially a slave, Rosa becomes a free person wanted by the Spanish government for healing. This is the first example of relocation camps which later inspired Hitler's Concentration Camps.

Teaching Ideas:
Research the 3 wars for an independent Cuba. Research the changes in Cuba. A good supportive match for the social studies/history and for written response in journalism and copy change poetry. Create a timeline of events in the book and in other parts of the world during this time. Engage in plant study.
