Summary:
When the Sudanese civil war reaches his village in 1985, eleven-year-old Salva becomes separated from his family and must walk with other Dinka tribe members through southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya in search of safe haven. Based on the life of Salva Dut, who, after emigrating to America in 1996, began a project to dig water wells in Sudan.

Teaching Ideas:
There are two intertwining tales here. Write an account from current events from the point of view of two people who are brought together. Have Nya, after she has had the opportunity to attend school, write a letter to Salva telling him how much the water well has meant to her. Coud introduce the book with a reading of the last paragraph from "A Message from Salva Dut" pg. 117 as an inspiration to persevere. Teacher could stop and make predictions throughout the text and create questions that could be answered directly from the text.
