Teaching Ideas:
Use as an example of how research is done. Teach text structures with its many nonfiction elements. A KWL to determine what students know will be insightful here. Even just the question, "What does sugar have to do with slavery?" would prove a good introduction to the book. Discuss the sequence of causes and effects in the book.
