Summary:
When Ivan, a gorilla who has lived for years in a down-and-out circus-themed mall, meets Ruby, a baby elephant that has been added to the mall,he decides that he must find them a better life. Although a work of fiction, this story comes from a true story of a gorilla that spent 27 years in captivity without seeing one of his own kind. After a public outcry the gorilla was taken to live at Zoo Atlanta.

Teaching Ideas:
Good book for discussion of animal rights and how one person can make a difference. How much do animals understand? What are humans responsible for? Students can conduct research on gorilla behavior both in the wild and in captivity.
