Summary:
This is a fascinating and very visual biography of the early life of Audubon that explains why he came to America and how and where he developed an interest in birds. This interest led him to learning about migration by banding birds.

Teaching Ideas:
A fine book to use as a read aloud as an introduction to a variety of response choices. Teacher should read aloud. Have students reread it. Visit one of the websites devoted to Audubon's work. Take kids outdoors for a hike to birdwatch. Offer a variety of response opportunities: journal writing, Sketch to Stretch, letter to the author, unsent letter to Audubon. The book can be used as a simple introduction to parts of the scientific method.
