Summary:
An engaging story about the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel - a 63 year old school teacher. Van Allsburg combines sepia toned illustrations with a smooth and flowing text while using tension to hold the reader's interest.

Teaching Ideas:
This is a good fit for National Women's History Month and it is a good choice for a read aloud. Students could write a newspaper article about the event. They could devise a way to protect something (an egg perhaps) while it was being dropped from a high place. Research other people who have attempted this feat. The book can be used for vocabulary development and to study figurative language.
