Summary:
This is a powerful reenactment of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and how it affected the poor section of the ninth ward. The hurricane and subsequent levee failure come to life through the eyes of a twelve year old special girl. The voice is extremely powerful tale of bravery, love and friendship.

Teaching Ideas:
This book has so many possibilities--timeline of this tragic event would be a great way to make it come alive for students. Compare the news reports of the event with the first person narrative. Make a storyboard of events using a time line and illustrations. Make a map of New Orleans to explain why the 9th Ward was flooded. Students can read and compare multiple texts about hurricanes, collect their research to write an essay.
