Summary:
An historical account of the discrimination against the Asian immigrants in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Angel Island, located near Alcatraz Island, was the Ellis Island of the west coast of the U.S. but was more of a prison than a welcoming center. Drawings on the walls of the detention center give insight about this historical discovery. The text is complimented by primary source photos and artwork.

Teaching Ideas:
A timeline would work well with this book. Copy changes of the poetry found on the walls would be another technique. This book provides a unique opportunity to teach students how narrative elements can be incorporated into and enhance nonfiction text.
