Summary:
An interesting account of fightin' Black Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight of the world in 1910. The prejudicial issues of the era made this a monumental task. Bold words and bold color art combine to create a rhythmic text that captures the energy of this larger than life athlete.

Teaching Ideas:
A good compliment to books about historical athletes. This book belongs in a text set about athletes overcoming the barriers of segregation that includes First in the Field, Nothing But Trouble, Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow, and We Are the Ship. The illustrations and rhythms make this a good read-aloud to interest readers. The afterword contains additional biographical information that readers can explore online.
