Summary:
An in-depth recounting of the collapse of a Chilean copper mine in 2010 that entombed 33 miners for 69 days, their heroic struggle to survive and the efforts of those who saved them. The book is riveting in detail and even inspirational. Book contains examples of nonfiction text structures: diagrams, maps, timelines as well as rich narrative. A list of the miners, a timeline of the disaster, a glossary of mining terms, and notes and sources are included. Of particular interest is a short chapter "How I Wrote this Book" which would be invaluable for students wanting to write research reports.

Teaching Ideas:
Pair with a science lesson on the earth's structure so readers are able to have the human perspective of workers who have chosen mining as their livelihood. A compare/contrast perspective of author could also be developed in a writing activity. Begin with a Probable Passage to introduce vocabulary and predict outcomes. Have students Two Column Journal as they read independently. Add a Discussion Web after reading. There are many questions that can drive student talk about text.
