Teaching Ideas:
The quotes can be used as writing prompts. Select another historical figure and select a series of your favorite quotations that he or she made famous. Author's note mentions that this was the first national election she had voted in. Using this text as a model, students use quotes from the president of their first election and build a story around it. Students can also take the quotes and paraphrase what JFK is saying. Although somewhat lengthy, text will make a powerful readers' theater incorporated into the teaching of social studies/history.
