Summary: |
The "scrapbook" format of this biography, explores Ben Franklin's life thematically rather than chronologically, allowing the reader to grasp what a multi-talented person he was. The author includes extensive back matter for further research. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The back matter includes some fabulous web sites, some interactive, that students should enjoy and find useful for further discussion and writing. Several classroom strategies could lead to gathering material as a group for writing individual character sketch (see below). The PBS series on John Adams included much of Ben Franklin's stay in France and his involvement in the Declaration of Independence, portions of which might be useful. Do we have any national figures today that would be a comparison?
In a study of American history, each of these chapters could be used to give an additional perspective on this period of time and Franklin's influence on history. |
