Summary:
In 1943, during the German occupation of Denmark, ten-year-old Annemarie learns how to be brave when she helps shelter her Jewish friend from the Nazis. It is about the power of the Danish Resistance, heroes of a nation, the power of human decency over the evils of war.

Teaching Ideas:
Compare/contrast the Danish reistance and their rescue of their Jewish population with the Underground Railroad. What problems did the Danish meet in rescuing their Jewish neighbors and how did they solve them? Write a letter to Annemarie from Ellen telling about her escape to Sweden. Research why the Nazis never invaded Sweden though they invaded both Denmark and Norway. Compare the types of courage that each of the characters had to show. An excellent source for studying the German invasion of Denmark and the resistance of the population.
