Summary: |
In journal format, the life of a thirteen year old girl in 1896 comes to life. Anetra Kaminska is sold to an older widower of three children in a mining town, for the price of her and her brother's tickets from Poland to America. Her life is extremely hard with little joy, which is the manner of life for foreigners in these coal mines. Eventually our heroine finds true love and personal discovery. An excellent novel in the Dear America series, history in a personal, relative way. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This novel would be a great way to compare and contrast various aspects of the lives in 1896 and today. Prejudice, unions, non-citizen rights, women's rights, medicine, and a teen woman's rights and duties, are some of the topics to compare. |
