Summary:
This Persian folktale by 13th century poet Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi tells how a merchant provides his talking parrot with everything the parrot could have but not the one thing that the parrot wanted--his freedom.

Teaching Ideas:
Compare needs and wants from the viewpoint of the merchant and the parrot. Discuss the history of Persia in the 13th century. Talk about the moral issue of keeping the parrot for the joy of the merchant. Apply this wisdom to everyday situations. Compare to other folktales and lessons learned.
