HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies

Summary:
Using a scrapbook format with blocks of stories and archival photographs, the author provides a chatty, up-close biography of Abraham and Mary Lincoln. Since the book is in a scrapbook format, students can start reading anywhere in the book or read in the traditional linear fashion. The book offers all kinds of little known facts about these two seminal figures in American history. The author includes extensive resource materials.

Teaching Ideas:
This book makes a good reference book addition to a text set on Lincoln. Since there is so much information, a group of students could divide up the articles in a section to prepare a report on the topic for class using the jigsaw strategy. Information about the early life of Mary Lincoln might make an interesting character sketch. Students could choose a historical figure and make a scrapbook about their life.
