Summary:
Shin-chi's toy canoe, given to him by his father, sustains him during his first year at an Indian residential school. This story occurs when Native Americans were forced to attend Indian residential schools where they were made to learn the white man's ways.

Teaching Ideas:
This would be a good lead-in into the study of the injustices done to Native Americans. Also could be used as a discussion starter for how mementos of home comfort us when we must be away.
