The author illustrates different elements and places on earth with clear simple text and beautiful black and white photographs that have been colored by hand. |
Teaching Ideas: |
As a reference work, pages could be excerpted on specific topics: igneous rock, sedimentary rock, woodlands, grasslands, volcano. It could be used with Surtsey and Volcanoes in a unit on the evolution of the planet. In a totally different vein, it would make an interesting study on different types of photographic illustration: Seymour Simon uses a microscope in Star Walk; Children of the Dust Bowl (Stanley) and Kids at Work (Freedman) use archival material; The Block (Hughes) uses collage; Brown Angels (Myers) and Glorious Angels (Myers) use sepia tints. Cynthia Rylant uses Walker Evans's photographs in Something Permanent to stimulate poetry.
