Summary:
At 15, true son John Butler is returned to his biological white family by his Native American adoptive father. After he escapes with his friend and rescuer Halt Arrow, he is caught between two families and two cultures.

Teaching Ideas:
Readers see a Native American point of view about the westward expansion, nature, family, ownership, etc. Teachers may want to do a teacher-directed reading by the whole class with discussions comparing and contrasting the two cultures and comparing them then and now. The setting in Pennsylvania and Ohio would lend itself to map work. This classic may be especially good for students to read and analyze.
