Summary: |
This is a fictional story about the a young girl in Afghanistan who wants to attend school and the building of the first school for girls in that country.Tolerance and determination are key themes. |
Teaching Ideas: |
GED scholars come to the program with determination. With that in mind, I would use this book in several ways. First as a read aloud. Then as a silent read using any comparison and contrast tool that would allow the GED student to compare and contrast his/her own situation.I would focus on the obstacles that kept them from completing a traditional education as compared to Raja's.Further have them discuss where they found support to return to school so that they might see their own determination to succeed. Chart the percentage of girls who are denied education/literacy in countries across the world.
Read about some girls who achieved literacy and how their lives have been changed. |
