Summary:
Based loosely on the life of Lodner Phillips and his response to his daughter's question, "Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a fish?" Phillips builds a series of submarines and attempts to pilot them in Lake Michigan.

Teaching Ideas:
A nice read aloud and discussion of things and ideas that work and those that don't to promote problem solving. Study some examples of other inventions. Consider the Scientific Method. Have students create an invention of their own - improving on something that already is.
