Summary: |
Russell Freedman scores his usual high marks for this biography of FDR, complete with excellent archival photographs and bibliographical information for further study. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Students in a class could each take a chapter and share the information in a jigsaw strategy. Or a single student could keep a reading journal to note important events in FDR's life. Students could also choose a special time of FDR's life and research more information--polio, New Deal, WPA, World War II, etc.It might be interesting to do a Venn Diagram comparison with FDR and the Great Depression programs and Obama and the current Recession programs. How FDR overcame his disabilities from polio or how a privileged rich man became the champion of the poor and dispossessed might make good discussion/writing topics. Learners might do an Agree? Disagree? strategy on whether FDR was right for staying out of the the war as long as he did? |
