Summary:
This graphic novel originates in the personal involvement of the writer/artist in Hurricane Katrina, contributing seven vivid, authentic voices to enrich our understanding of this national disaster. Juxtaposed alongside the images we saw on television as this disaster unfolded, Neufeld's powerful images and writing take the reader deeper into this awful event. Yet, out of the despair Katrina brought to millions, we are able to see the resilience of these seven human beings and realize how many thousands more stories have gone untold.

Teaching Ideas:
has the potential to generate powerful discussions about values, problem solving, government, and politics that affect a wide range of humanity. Encourage readers to discuss the Afterword on the process of creating the book. Since the seven characters are vividly "drawn," some version of Readers' Theater would be interesting--either a condensed version of the book or of one section to show how each responded to the hurricane. And since this is a graphic novel, there are questions about the visuals: How does the artist use color? Do the images capture the violence of the storm and its aftermath? Teachers might read aloud passages from the book Zeitoun, another non-fiction book about Katrina that covers similar issues. And, of course, the Internet provides images and reports of Katrina.
