Summary: |
Eleven-year-old Elijah, the first to be born free in a Canadian settlement for runaway slaves at the end of the Underground Railroad, though considered "fra-gile" and talkative by adults, performs an heroic feat with his chucking stones. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Perhaps before reading, students could learn about the Buxton Settlement, its rules, location, and history on www.buxtonmuseum.com/history/hist-ELGIN.html. A discussion of why the author titled the book as he did would set up expectations. Students could keep a reading journal of 1) the progress of Elijah's maturity; and 2) the events that teach him about slavery that he never experienced. Since Elijah and several characters are richly drawn, readers might choose a favorite and discuss his character before writing a character sketch. |
