Summary: |
During a malarial epidemic in the late 18th century Cleveland, Ohio, ten-year-old Seth Doan surprises his family, his neighbors, and himself by having the strength to carry and grind enough corn to feed everyone. |
Teaching Ideas: |
How much corn would be needed to feed three families if that were all they were eating? Use the serving sizes from a box of cornmeal to help make that decision. Research how corn was ground in the eighteenth century. Why was malaria a problem in Cleveland, but not two miles away on higher ground? Students could create journals of other characters and see through their perspectives. |
