Summary: |
This biography of photographer Dorthea Lange contains many of her photographs. Lange photographed and helped raise awareness of the poor conditions of the migrant workers during the Depression. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Students can use photos by Lange and others to explore the power of visual media. Fiction and non-fiction texts about the Depression would explain why people during this time left their homes to seek work. Students could construct timelines with events during this time and use maps to locate the migrant worker camps and to trace the routes people took to find work. Venn diagrams could be constructed to compare and contrast the Depression with recent economic downturns. Students could discuss the role photography has had throughout history to raise awareness of social problems. Lange's photographs could be compared with those of Lewis Hines. See _Kids at Work_ by Russell Freedman for a biography and photographs of Hines. |
