Teaching Ideas:
Hard scrabble life can make strong people. Discuss the values and character traits that can emerge from struggle. Have students discuss the themes of the story, eg. nothing's so bad that it isn't good for something. Companion books for students to read are _Children of the Dust Bowl_ by Stanley and _Out of the Dust_ by Hesse.
