Summary: |
The author portrays the 1960's Civil Rights sit-ins at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina through the eyes of a young Southern black girls. Richly muted paintings illustrate the story. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers will want to use this book in a text set on Civil Rights. Unsent Letters could be developed from the young girl to her older siblings as they are jailed for their part in the protests. A Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the lunch counter protests and the bus boycotts would raise important issues about how a movement starts, often with a person or small group, and grows and evolves to some change. Students could create a classroom newspaper about the event. |
