Summary: |
Based on extensive research, this book explores the political intrigue surrounding the disappearance of the first American colony at Roanoke, in what is now North Carolina. The suspenseful text is supplemented with archival photographs and paintings, a timeline, source notes, and an index. |
Teaching Ideas: |
In order to understand the political intrigue, teachers will want to prepare students with some historical context, perhaps using the timeline that is included. Students may want to form theories of the disappearance of the colonists before reading, and then note clues that prove or disprove them as they read. The teaching strategy Herringbone would enable students to follow the well-researched arguments about the disappearance of the American colony. Other strategies that help readers support conclusions would also be useful i.e. Agree? Disagree?, Web Discussions, and Write and Share. Yolen's Encounter makes a good pairing especially in exploring point-of-view. As a culminating activity, students could write an essay/paragraph on what they think happened in Roanoke. |
