Summary:
This retelling of Rumpelstiltskin is set in small town Southern USA. The dialogue and dialect are delightful, and the illustrations by one of America's finest artists also contribute to telling the tale.

Teaching Ideas:
By comparing this tale to Rumplestiltskin, classes could analyze the genre of the fairy tale or of the short story. Students would have fun rewriting the dialect into that of their own communities. Some ABE teachers working in prisons have found the rewriting of fairy tales to be a powerful tool for self expression, and this book would provide a wonderful model. Students may also want to write journal entries reacting to Bessie Grace or to her plight.
