Summary: |
This book, illustrated with historical photographs, tells the story of two young men, one white and one black, whose common goal in life is to bring equality between the races. Their story is set during the historic freedom rides of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 1960's. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Students can use this book as a great resource on the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Students can use the book as a way to examine one concept from two different perspectives. Readers could construct a compare/contrast chart looking at John's and Jim's motivation, family reaction, instances of extreme bravery, effect on their subsequent lives and so forth. Either person would be a good subject for a bio poem.
