Summary:
This is the story of young Louis, who decides to do what his father would do and help runaway slaves make it across the Detroit River to Canada.

Teaching Ideas:
This book joins the Underground Railroad text set. Teachers could use the Agree/ Disagree/ Why? strategy with issues such as "Louis did the right thing." Readers may also consider his mother's perspective. The story lends itself to map work. Ask students to try to figure out why people crossed to Canada from Detroit.
