Summary:
Each letter of the alphabet introduces a famous jazz musician in a different poetic form. Of particular interest to teachers and students are the biographical sketches of the musicians and excellent notes on the poetic forms. The phenominal art work is worth the price of admission. This is an ABC for adults.

Teaching Ideas:
These poems make riveting read alouds. Teachers will want to bring in music to listen to as you read. Readers may want to pick a favorite section and introduce the class to the musician and the poetic form using the notes at the end. The poems offer stimulating material for the study of rhythm, rhyme and special uses of language such as assonance and alliteration. Teachers will also find some selections an enjoyable way to learn new vocabulary (Charlie Parker, King Oliver, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane among others). Libraries may have recordings of some of the musicians to play before discussing how the poetic form attempts to mimic the musical style. The relationship of the illustrations to the musicians and the poems would also be a topic for discussion and writing.
