Summary: |
a beautifully told and illustrated story that, according to the dust jacket, is "based on legend." The Old African has magical powers. This is the story of his capture and enslavement as a young man and ultimately, his plan to free his fellow slaves. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The mind reading might lead students to talk about/ write about people in their own lives with whom they can share ideas or communicate nonverbally. The role of wise elders in a family or community may also be a good choice for discussion/ writing. Students may want to explore the story of the Ybo Landing, perhaps through WWW searches. (Teachers may want to read the author and illustrator messages to students.) Text sets of author study (Lester) or illustrator study (J. Pinkney) would also work well. |
