Summary: |
With the help of her family and a few powerful friends, Prudence Crandall began a school for African-American girls in Canterbury, Connecticut, in 1833 despite boycotts, vandalism, and legal battles. An appendix provides historical research on the students who attended and on the "friends and enemies." |
Teaching Ideas: |
Readers may want to keep a journal while following the events to note Crandall's character development and problem-solving skills to discuss and write about later. Although complicated, the legal battle to prove that the Connecticut Black Law was against the U.S. Constitution is interesting and worthy of discussion. Students may want to dramatize her strategy to go to jail. An interview with Crandall late in her life makes a good comparison/contrast activity with the person we see battling for her school. How has she changed and how has she remained the same? |
