Summary:
For a senior class autobiography assignment, Robbie creates "a sound portrait" in a radio script format, which includes his extended family and his search for his long-absent father. One reviewer thought that the text is too disjointed and confusing for Pre-GED students.
Teaching Ideas:
Like many of Fleischman's bools, this book ("a house built of voices") begs to be read aloud with Readers' Theater, or at least a section of it. Learners should enjoy discussing and writing about the radio script format and how the book would have been different with a more traditional chronological plot. Or, Is it possible to read silently and "hear" the voices, music, and sound effects? Discussion Webs, Agree? Disagree? Why?, or Think-Pair-Share strategies would help explore the decision at the heart of the book--Robbie's mother's choice to raise Robbie without his father. Keeping a Reading Log of Robbie's creative development would enable readers to appreciate his maturation--and the oral format.
