Summary:
This somewhat fictionalized account recounts the stealing of Leonardi da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911 by Vincenzo Peruggia. End notes provide additional cultural and historical information.

Teaching Ideas:
This short, humorous story provides opportunities for generalization (main idea), inference (attitude of the Italian jailors), prediction (Stop on p. 30), and point of view (Tell the story for a French newspaper)(Who is the audience for the story?). Web searches for Perrugia, Vincenzo and Mona Lisa provide the reader with additional information and pictures. A Eureka dataabase search for da Vinci, Leonardo yields several books, including Katz' The Mona Lisa.
