Summary:
Three brothers live with their mother, disabled father and aging aunt in Washington, D.C. during the Vietnam war. Paul, the oldest and his mother's favorite, returns home from another drug rehabilitation program just as Joe, the middle very responsible son prepares to graduate from high school and join the Navy. Joe plans to leave his savings to Davey, the youngest who is successful in school and on the basketball court. An event occurs that changes all of their lives.

Teaching Ideas:
The setting of the 60's and 70's could be compared to today-slang, clothes, music, hair, street life. The book provides material for discussion and writing about problems that youth face in urban ghettos and for practicing violence prevention activities. Students could develop a matrix of the responses of the mother, father, and aunt to the three young men.
