This is a photographic chronicle of African American life. The text is very simple. The photos are very powerful. The author includes an index of the photos.

Teaching Ideas:
Probably best not to tinker with this wonderful book too much. Readers may want to create a timeline of the events. Students will want to discuss the photos based on the criteria for visual literacy. The book could be used as copy change for pictorial family biographies. Students could find and download photos related to their own ethnic/ cultural backgrounds.
