Summary:
A powerful graphic novel about a father who survived the Nazi concentration camps and his son in which Jews are depicted as mice and Nazis as cats. The story jumps back and forth between the present life in the Catskills and the past life in the camps. Although the father speaks English, the German speech patterns and visual presentation may be difficult for low-level readers.

Teaching Ideas:
Before and after comparisons of life in the concentration camps and life in the Catskills may help readers sort out the flashbacks. Readers would also benefit from exploration of the extended metaphor of cat and mouse for the interactions of Jews and Nazis. The book adds a visual dimension to a text set on the Holocaust. Students may want to discuss/write about he relationship between father and son and how it carries much of the emotional burden of the earlier experience of the concentration camps.
