Summary: |
A fascinating account of the famous ancient library of papyrus scrolls once located in Alexandria, Egypt. Included in the book are maps, a Ptolemy family tree, a glossary, a bibliography, and and index. The front pages simulate the look of papyrus. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The chapters on ancient scientists provide excellent material for researching ancient science, math, and astronomy. Although the book contains many supplementary materials, it lacks a timeline which students could construct. In May of 2004, the BBC announced that archeologists had discovered the site of the original library. Students can use Internet sources to try to solve the mystery of what caused the destruction of the library. In addition, students curious about papyrus will find anything they want to know on www.lib.umich.edu/pap/ and click on the K-12 button. |
