Summary:
The lives of a lighthousekeeper and his daughter are changed by the discovery of a baby washed ashore after a shipwreck on the coast of Maine in the 1850's.

Teaching Ideas:
Students can compare and contrast the book with Baby by Patricia Maclachlin or The Islander by Cynthia Rylant. Since the author reveals the time of the story slowly, readers could keep a reading journal of clues. Family literacy learners will enjoy noting Celia's speech and cognitive development supported by Quila's teaching. Learners will want to discuss the role of storytelling in this family. Web searches provide information about lighthouses. Try these sites as a beginning: www.maine.com/lights/www_vl.htm; www.lpl.org/div/light; and www.pbs.org/legendarylighthouses.
