Summary:
The author tells the story of her Chinese grandmother, Ruby, who yearned for learning and the opportunity to attend the university, which was against custom.

Teaching Ideas:
Learners could use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast Ruby's childhood in China and their grandparent's childhood. They might also want to discuss/write about someone they know who pursued their dreams against family traditions. Learners could tell the story of what happens to the grandmother after the book ends, predicting her future. As an exercise in inference, students might also discuss how the grandmother has influenced her granddaughter and how they came to that conclusion.
